This course will introduce students to incorporating natural materials found in nature that can be added to ceramic works. Not only does it link nature to ceramics, but it also raises awareness of the beauty of natural materials found in our local surroundings.
The workshop will introduce you to a variety of stones, sand, grog, and organic materials that can be easily foraged, purchased or made in the studio and added to any clay body to achieve a broader range of textures and results.
Simão will demonstrate techniques for processing, testing and incorporating them using three different wedging methods. The tutor will demonstrate how these additions respond to different hand-building methods. In the afternoon, you will be supported to create your own pots using the above techniques, which will be fired and ready for collection in a few weeks.
Adults of all abilities. From beginners to those attending previous pottery classes.
Please bring a packed lunch. Hot drinks will be provided throughout the day.

Simão Romualdo is an artist working with clay and wild foraged materials.
He creates objects that exist between sculpture, function, and craft using hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. Drawing upon ecological and archaeological references and emotion, he embraces the material and the process of making it with passion and curiosity.
Simão pieces are unique, one of a kind, and the reason to create them is to express who he is and where he is on his journey, inspired and guided by a nature-based aesthetic.
Through his work, he hopes to inspire a connection and revive an awareness of the natural world and the source of our beings.
Brazilian-born, trained in England and the USA, with a background in Interior & Spatial Design, he began working in ceramics in 2021. He continues his practice-led exploration into functional and sculptural ceramic vessels, hand-making each piece from London, United Kingdom.
