Design Your Own Floral Ceramic Tile with Kay Aplin on  Saturday 18th and 25th April

Who is the course suitable for

This workshop is suitable for adults of all skill levels.

Overview

Discover how to design and craft relief ceramic tiles using a variety of clay‑working techniques.
During the workshop, you will create a beautiful nature‑inspired design — such as a flower, plant, shell, fossil, leaf, or seed. Participants are welcome to bring their own ideas, photos, drawings, or reference materials. If you prefer, you can also use the provided reference resources to sketch your design before transforming it into a unique ceramic tile suitable for indoor or outdoor display.
You will learn to create your own mould from your design and produce a collection of handmade ceramic tiles to take home. Each tile will be approximately 20 cm square after firing. The number of tiles you complete will depend on your design and working speed, but most participants can expect to make around five tiles.

About Kay Aplin:

Kay Aplin is a renowned ceramic artist whose botanical‑themed work has been exhibited internationally. Her practice brings together craftsmanship, architectural ceramics, and contemporary art, resulting in highly distinctive tile‑based compositions.

As the creator of The Ceramic House, Kay has worked in ceramics for over 30 years, producing both public and private commissions across the UK and abroad. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections.

Kay’s creative process begins with close observation of the natural world. Using a digital microscope, she captures hidden details in botanical and geological specimens. These magnified forms reveal intricate patterns and textures, which she transforms into layered, sculptural ceramic designs.

Her exhibitions include the Aveiro Ceramics Biennial, Kogei Triennial Kanazawa, the British Ceramics Biennial, European Ceramic Context, and Collect, London.
