Remembrance Day Wreath-Making Project
The Camphill MK creative workshops worked together to make poppy wreaths for Remembrance Day on the 11th of November.
Participants created a total of eight wreaths, each with a handmade willow base. Residents’ initial drawings of poppies inspire each wreath design. All of the craft workshops collaborated to create the project.
Each wreath has its own personality and really reflects the style and work of each workshop, based here at Camphill.
The Arts & Crafts Workshop used coloured plastic and red and green crisps packets to create collaged poppies. Wire was used to shape the flowers and to add definition. Push pins were incorporated to make the poppy centres.
The Sewing Machine Group in the Arts & Crafts Workshop used buttons and machine-stitched fabric to make their poppies.
The Pottery Workshop made both 3-D and flat, clay poppies. These were rolled and moulded by hand in clay. Each poppy has been bisque-fired and glazed in our very own kiln.
The Natural Weaving Workshop created a series of poppies using yarn wrapping techniques to build up beautiful textures and layered effects. Leaf elements were crafted from willow, and traditional willow-weaving methods were used to construct and shape the designs.
We have really enjoyed being part of this project, seeing them on display in various locations around Milton Keynes, including at The Rose in honour of Remembrance Day. Our service user, Natasha, supported our CEO, Tim, in attending the ceremony. Natasha was mainly involved in creating several wreaths, especially the ceramic one, and she was very proud to be there.
