Colour at the Heart Exhibition – MK Gallery Café

Our Weavery Workshop has an exhibition at the MK Gallery Café, running now until the end of April.

We invite you to explore a vibrant world shaped by imagination, skill, and authentic self-expression. Our artists have produced multiple handwoven artworks. The collection brings together an inspiring selection of artworks created within our weavery workshops at Camphill Milton Keynes.

About Colour at the Heart Exhibition

Colour is central to everything we do. One weaver might begin with a treasured photograph, drawing out its colours to create a personal palette. Another may sketch, paint, or form paper collages to refine their design before choosing a final sequence of threads.

Once a design is chosen, workshop members work together to calculate and measure the warp. We then wind the warp, thread the heddles and reeds, and prepare the loom—tasks that call for time, care, patience, and joyful collaboration.

Every weaver follows a unique creative path. Each warp becomes an expression of individuality, resulting in handwoven fabrics unlike any other.

Celebrating Colour and Craft

This exhibition celebrates the richness of colour in our textiles.
Every piece carries a story, a personality, and the quiet imprint of the hands that made it.

Natural Weaving

Alongside our traditional weaving, we have developed a natural weaving project using flax and willow. Since 2020, we have followed the flax cycle “from seed to fabric”: sowing in April, harvesting in September, then retting, processing, and spinning fibres into yarn. This work deepens our connection to the land and brings a palette of soft, earthy colours that are entirely our own. It also supports our sustainability by creating our own materials for use in the Weavery.

Weavery at Camphill Milton Keynes

The weaving displayed here is rooted in anthroposophy, the spiritual and social philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, who understood each person as a unity of body, soul, and spirit. This perspective continues to guide life in Camphill Communities worldwide, shaping both the artistic and therapeutic work of our workshops. Steiner saw handwork as essential for healthy human development—and weaving, with its rhythm, colour, and texture, naturally became central to Camphill practice, nourishing thinking, feeling, and will. Camphill Milton Keynes, founded in 1981, opened its first Weavery Workshop in Pennyland. Today, the workshop holds nine floor looms and four table looms, each dressed with between 3 and 10 metres of warp (weaving threads). Depending on its complexity, a single length of weaving may take three to twelve months to complete. Around thirty weavers take part each week, each bringing their own imagination, rhythm, and colour sense to the work. In recent years, the Weavery has collaborated with MK Gallery, creating special cushions for exhibitions and displaying our artworks. Our handwoven products.

A Colour at the Heart exhibition runs until 30th April 2026.
