Miguel’s Challenge Diary
- Day 1: We started off riding from the Metz through the Scenic Moselle River, through Luxembourg, Germany and back to Metz, again! The excitement and energy was high. Steve Bradley started us off as the first rider, followed by a leap-frogging with Phil and Myself. It didn’t take us long to have our fist incident, a minor collision with a car! Oops! Luckily no one was majorly injured and two a half hours later, we eagerly resumed cycling and managed to catch up with the other teams, we pushed hard and still managed to finish on time for dinner! We cycled uphill (in accumulation) over 12,000 feet.
- Day 2: We left from the Metz again crossing borders between Germany and Belgium, heading north towards Valenciennes. We were really determined to make up for the first days’ delays, we took around 8 stints each and we were able to finish as the second team overall that day! We rode through beautiful national parks, roads framed by forests and hills. My hardest stint this day was cycling up a 4 mile hill and then not getting to cycle down! The stunning scenery however made it worth the ride.
- Day 3: Day three was slightly more relaxed than the first two! We headed north-west towards Flanders in Belgium and finished in Ypres. Although our minds were focused on the task in hand, we were mesmerized by the scenery. It wasn’t without it’s emotion either, our route took us past some WW1 Grave sites and the evening ended with the ‘Last Post’ ceremony at Menin Gate; A very moving display held every evening at 8pm since the war ended.
As it is each year, the event was a joy to take part in! The route was very well thought out with plenty of adventures behind every corner. We would like to thank everyone that has supported us in sponsoring this challenge so far!
